Upon returning to the Netherlands, after living in China for 1.5 years, I found myself longing for all the delicious food the country has to offer. In particular, the Sichuan region, with its wonderful mala flavor profile, had opened my eyes. Fortunately, the recipes for my favorite Sichuan dishes are readily available online. However, not all ingredients are easy to find in the Netherlands—or even in Europe. The purist in me couldn’t bear the thought of simply replacing all the amazing chilies in the dishes with another variety that was available. Often, these chilies were the heart of the dish. So I set out to find suppliers where I could source these chilies and other products from the region. As you can see, with success.

Expecting that I’m not the only one searching for more authentic ingredients from the Sichuan region, we decided to start this webshop. For now, we mainly sell chilies and Sichuan peppercorns, but we hope to greatly expand our range in the future with soy sauces, vinegars, doubanjiang, and all the other fantastic ingredients the region has to offer!

About the Sichuan region

The Sichuan region, located in the southwest of China, is a place of profound geographical and cultural richness. Encircled by mountains and dissected by the Yangtze River and its tributaries, Sichuan is known for its fertile lands and diverse climates, which contribute to its reputation as the "Heavenly Country" due to its abundance of food and natural resources.

Sichuan plays a pivotal role in China's modern economy, being a hub for technology, manufacturing, and agriculture. Despite this modernity, traditional life thrives in its rural areas, where age-old farming practices continue to shape the landscape.

At the heart of Sichuan's identity, however, is its cuisine. This cuisine is famous for its bold flavors, particularly the use of Sichuan peppercorns, chili peppers, and garlic, creating the iconic 'ma la' (numbing and spicy) sensation cherished by food enthusiasts. Sichuan cuisine is celebrated worldwide for its depth of flavor and variety.
